Who killed the dog? What was the reason behind taking such an extreme step?

The story 'The Ashes that made trees bloom' is about a kind farmer and his beloved dog who was killed by the cruel neighbours. The neighbours wanted to find a treasure so they dragged the dog around their garden. The dog stopped at a pine tree and started scratching the ground which made the neighbours think that he had managed to locate the treasure. But upon seeing a dead kitten instead of the treasure, they became furious at the dog. Hence they beat him mercilessly to death.
