Fish generally produce thousands or millions of eggs. But 99.999% are eaten by various predators in the sea. [The number of 9's varies!] Birds in general produce only a few eggs at a time but success rates may be more like 10% surviving to maturity.

In animals such as frogs and fishes, the process of fertilization takes place outside the body. This type of fertilization is known as external fertilization. In these animals large number of eggs and sperms are released at a time.In external fertilization, sperms do not have a definite route to reach the eggs. So, they are released in large amounts to increase the chances of fertilization. In addition to it the eggs to do not have protection and they can be easily destroyed by the predators. So, their large numbers enables adequate number of eggs to get fertilized even if some eggs are destroyed.

In hens the process of fertilization occurs inside the body. This type of fertilization is known as internal fertilization. Relatively lower number of eggs are produced in these animals because sperms are directed to the egg through a specific track and after fertilization the eggs are protected by a protective shell. They are released in environment after fertilization. So, there is no need to produce large number of eggs in these organism.

BECAUSE IN EXTERNAL FERTILISATION THE CHANCES OF SEVIVAL OF THE OFFSPRING IS LESS.

Frogs lay thousands of eggs because the fertilisation takes place outside the female body and thus most of the eggs are dispersed by water action , etc. and some water animals feed on eggs also. So they lay many eggs so that it increases the chance of egg to be fertilised.

Female turtles lay their eggs on sandy beaches, burying them in deep pits. Each turtle lays 100 or so eggs. Many of the eggs are dug out of the nests by scavengers, and young turtles that do hatch are often eaten by predators. ... The threats faced by baby turtles include being eaten by gulls, crabs, and fish.

they can be damaged by harsh climates and also they eat each other for survival

Though these animals lay hundreds of eggs and release millions of sperms, all eggs do not get fertilised and develop into new individual. This is because eggs and sperms get exposed to water movement, wind an rainfall. Also there are other animals in pond which may feed on eggs. Thus, production of large number of eggs and sperms is necessary to ensure fertilisation of at least few of them.
