why is the pyramid of biomass of phytoplankton inverted ?

Reason for pyramid of biomass of phytoplankton to be inverted:

  • In aquatic ecosystems in which the producers are phytoplanktons which have short life spans and rapid turnover and have lower mass than the heterotrophs.
  • Where the biomass of trophic level depends upon the reproductive potential and longevity of the member.
  • Where the weight of the producers is less than the weight of the consumers. The best example is the pond ecosystem, where the mass of the producers of the ecosystem, which are generally the phytoplanktons is always less than the mass of the consumers in the ecosystem, which are generally fish and other insects.
