why the colour of bunsen flame is blue in colour and a candle has a colour yellow?plese explain me?

Combustion of a substance requires oxygen, higher the amount of oxygen better is the combustion.

In a bunsen burner the fuel (gas) mixes with oxygen from air to form a mixture, this results into complete combustion of the fuel and very less amount of soot is formed. (there is a small hole near the base of the bunsen burner which is an inlet for air into the burner, if it is closed flame turns yellow)

Where as in the case of the candle, only oxygen near the base of the wick is utilised for combustion causing  incomplete combustion and more soot is formed. (at the base candle flame appears bluish or greenish due to same reason)

  • When complete combustion ( it is the usage of enough oxygen ) occurs, it produces a blue flame.

  • When incomplete combustion ( in the presence of less oxygen ) occurs, it produces a yellow flame.

Thus, a bunsen burner produces a blue flame which proves that there is complete combustion ( releasing very less amount of residue) whereas a candle produces a yellow flame which proves that there is incomplete combustion taking place ( releasing residue into the atmosphere )
